Mother, daughter die in vehicle wreck
Published: Saturday, March 11th, 2006
A Fort Sumner mother and daughter died Saturday morning when the vehicle they were riding in flipped over numerous times on U.S. 60 near Encino, according to New Mexico State Police Public Information Officer Jimmy Glascock.
Elaine Abeyta, 28, died from her injuries eight hours after being airlifted to an Albuquerque hospital while Candace Abeyta, 8, died at the scene, Glascock said.
Abeyta’s two other children, 10 and 9, were airlifted to Albuquerque, but Glascock said he didn’t have information on their injuries.
Abeyta was driving west on U.S. 60 about 8 a.m. in a 1999 Ford sport utility vehicle when she drifted toward the north side of the road. She overcorrected and the vehicle rolled numerous times, Glascock said.
Glascock said the driver and passengers were wearing seat belts.
