Mary Katherine Kawal Burns, 54, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at her home in San Diego. She was born Oct. 2, 1951, in Detroit to Edmond W. and Betty G. Kawal. She married Shaun Burns, formerly of Clovis, June 16, 1973, in Los Angeles. She taught at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Maryland from 1975 to 1978 for three years. In San Diego, she taught kindergarten and first grade at the School of the Madeleine from 1986 to 1989, and she continued her career with 15 years of teaching kindergarten at La Jolla Country Day School. She served as assistant director of Lower School at LJCDS until her death. She served as a lector, grief counselor, and Eucharistic Minister at Our Mother of Confidence Catholic Church. Family members said she was the glue that kept the Kawal family together, organizing family gatherings each year over the holidays. She liked going for walks with friends and family, and she could frequently be seen on an early-morning four-mile circuit along Mission Bay, they said. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tim Kawal. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Jim and David Burns; a sister, Peggy High, and three brothers, Don, Jim and Tom Kawal. The family suggests memorials can be made to Casa de Los Pobres, an organization of Catholic nuns who operate a community outreach center in Tijuana, Mexico. The U.S. address is 6432 Cardeno Drive, La Jolla, Calif. 92037. Arrangements are by Featheringill Mortuary in San Diego.
