PORTALES — You could say the Eastern New Mexico University softball team fattened up on offense on Saturday. The Zias hit better than .500 in both games of a doubleheader, pounding out 33 hits with every starter getting at least one in both games in a 9-1, 14-0 pounding of College of the Southwest at Zia Softball Field. First baseman Elizabeth Whipkey went 6-for-7 for the day as the Zias (16-10) scored in all nine turns at bat in the run-rule shortened contest. ENMU improved to 6-0 this season against the second-year Mustangs, coached by former ENMU coach Ron Landschoot. Seniors Jessica Nocas and Tina Whitt each hit her team-best seventh home run of the season in the opener. Whitt drove in three runs with a bases-loaded walk in the third and a two-run homer in the fourth, while Nocas finished 3-for-3. Senior Amanda Nightingale (4-2) cruised to the win, allowing three hits and an unearned run in the fourth. The Mustangs (4-12) contributed to their own downfall with six errors. In the second game, Whipkey collected a double and three singles while senior second baseman Tracy Jordan went 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Whipkey and Whitt hit consecutive two-out RBI doubles in the first before Jordan singled home Whitt for a 3-0 lead. Designated hitter Courtney McClasky belted a two-run homer in the Zias’ three-run third, and ENMU finished it off with seven runs in the fourth on eight hits highlighted by two-run singles from Christina Helland and Jordan. Senior Rosemary Moreno threw a five-inning three-hitter for the win.
