Don Huddleston Services: Have been held. Mr. Don Huddleston, 79, of Portales, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. He was born on May 1, 1925, in Richland Springs, Texas, to Jessie and Eli Huddleston. He served in the Navy during World War II. On Feb. 25, 1946, in Brewton, Ala. he married Maxine Harris. Following his discharge from the service he came to Portales where he worked in a series of jobs with local businesses. He sold cars for much of his life until 2001. In the early 1960s he began buying and breeding quarter horses. Family members said this became one of the great loves of his life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portales where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Portales Country Club and the West Texas Senior Golfers and played golf regularly. He also was a member of the Portales Lions Club, the American Legion and the VFW post in Portales. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Peggy McAlister. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Carol Holder (and husband, Terry) of Goose Creek, S.C.; and two sisters, Mattie Gushwa of Lubbock and Patsy Block of Sioux City, S.D. Dr. Herbert Bergstrom will officiate the services. Burial will be at the Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers are Bobby Jack Stewart, Dennis Darrow, Melvin Littlejohn, Dean Moore, Ray Chambers, and Jimmie Moore. Honorary pallbearers are Charles McAlister, the members of the Portales Lions Club, his golfing buddies and all his many friends. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer Association, 9500 Montgomery NE, Ste 209, Albuquerque, NM 87111. Arrrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
