ALBUQUERQUE — Senior Brian Romero led three Clovis High runners in the top 10 Saturday as the Wildcats finished third in the varsity boys division of the Sandia Invitational cross country meet. Small-school power Jemez Valley dominated the field, comprised of mostly Class 4A and 5A schools, behind individual winner Vernon Tosa. Jemez Valley finished with 54 team points to 96 for Eldorado and 100 for the Cats. Romero finished sixth in a time of 17:59 over five kilometers. Fellow seniors Matt Appelman (18:27) and Tyrell Northcutt (18:29) were ninth and 10th, respectively. “Matt led almost the entire race; he took off and the other guys just had to keep up,” CHS coach Brian Stacy said. “The top three (Romero, Appelman and Northcutt) are looking fine. We’ve just got to close the gap with (the) four, five and six (runners). “Brian (Romero) finished strong. He just stayed with Matt and outkicked him the last half-mile.” Sandia ran away with a 70-point team victory in girls varsity competition, with Clovis finishing fourth. Junior Megan Willis led the Lady Wildcats, finishing 15th in a time of 23:06, while Tori Northcutt was 18th in 23:20.
