Gene Atchley Services: Have been held. Mrs. Imogene “Gene” Atchley, 70, of Portales, died Saturday, July 26, 2003, at University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born on Aug. 29, 1932, in Cordell, Okla., to Virgie and Dub Dunaway. She grew up in Cordell. She married Bill Morrison in 1949. They made their home in Liberal, Kan., until 1951, when they moved to San Diego. She moved to Portales in 1968. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Portales Cabinet Shop and later at Jimmy Privett’s Hatchery. In late 1977, she went to work at Allsup’s as a bookkeeper, and retired in 1988. She married Lowell Atchley on March 31, 1981. For 16 years she and her husband delivered newspapers for Albuquerque, Amarillo, Lubbock and Portales. Family members said she loved to read, do crossword puzzles, sew and embroidery. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Dunaway; and by her first husband, who died in 1963. She is survived by her husband; two sons, Mike Morrison (and wife, Donna) of Ruidoso and Mark Morrison (Janene) of Rogers, Ark.; two daughters, Peggy Parker (Patrick) and Sally Perez (Charles), all of Portales; two step-daughters, Kathy Malone (Bryan) of Idaho Springs, Colo. and Betty Fox of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Dunaway of Dimmitt, Texas; and a sister, Patsy Bolen of Odessa, Texas. Gary Jones and Ron Dunaway will officiate the services. Burial will be at Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charles Perez, Bryan Malone, John Gentry, Jimmy Privett, Eugene Lee and Gene Atchley. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
