FARWELL -- Lynn Ojeda got more than she bargained for Sunday evening when she made a quick stop at the Allsup’s convenience store in Farwell. “Vince Gill was purchasing a Coca-Cola, and the female worker there asked him for his autograph,” said Ojeda, 44, of Clovis. Because of Gill’s attire, Ojeda didn’t recognize him at first. “I asked him, ‘Sir, excuse me, but who are you?’ He said, ‘I’m Vince Gill, ma’am,’ ” Ojeda then asked the country music star for his autograph. “I got to shake his hand, He was a pretty neat guy. I couldn’t even think straight when I left there,” she said. Ojeda told her daughter, Anysia, who was in her car, that she met Gill. Anysia pointed to a nearby Chevy Suburban, and said, “Amy Grant is sitting in that Suburban.” Mike Pomper, Border Town Days committee chairman, said Amy Grant and Vince Gill come every other year to the event. “It’s not a big deal,” he said. “Amy’s been coming here for 15 years. This year, she and Vince watched the parade in Texico, shopped at Joe’s Boot Shop, ate some barbecue here in Farwell and enjoyed the events. We’ve never asked them to perform here. We just try to treat them like regular folks.” Pomper said Amy Grant has been attending the event because “some people who work for her are from the Pleasant Hill area.”
