Billy Barton Services: Have been held. Mr. Billy J. Barton, 73, of Portales, a retired telephone lineman, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales. He was born Sept. 14, 1929, in Portales to Jewel and W.G. Barton. He grew up in Portales. As a young man, he worked with his father in the family well drilling business. On Dec. 29, 1948, he married Margie Williams. In 1952, he was drafted into the Army, and served part of his service in Paris. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Portales and began working for the telephone company. He was a lineman for 32 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Clovis, and had served in various offices. He also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, and was a member of the Portales Country Club. Family members said he enjoyed collecting old coins and building model cars. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Grimes; and by his wife, Margie, who died Nov. 20, 1996. Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca (Roger) King of Lubbock; and two grandchildren, Brandon and Cameron King. Honorary pallbearers will be Shorty Southern, Bill Baker, Olen Linton, Jack Dendy, Babe Morgan and Tim Marsh. Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
