MELROSE — Melrose has named Des Moines boys basketball coach Jim Doherty to take a similar position with the Buffaloes.

Doherty was hired as a contract coach and replaces Lyndel Bonds, who is taking the football position at 6-man Vaughn.

Doherty has been at Des Moines since 1998, starting as an assistant boys basketball coach. He has been the head coach of boys and girls basketball, volleyball and track for each of the last two seasons.

His teams have made three trips to state in boys basketball, four in girls basketball and five in volleyball. The Demons won the Class 1A boys basketball state title in 2006.
