ROSWELL —The Portales Rams scored 10 runs before New Mexico Military came to bat, and never looked back in a District 4-3A sweep.
Eric Aguilar had a three-run homer in the first inning of a 17-0 win, and Logan Erf pitched a complete game and hit a three-run triple to help the Rams claim a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
“When you’re on the road you hope to come away with at least a split,” Portales coach Arturo Ontiveros said. “We were able to get two games, even though we weren’t able to hit the ball well in the second game.”
The Rams (13-8, 11-3 district) return home for an 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader against Dexter.
Senior Brandon Adkins was pulled after two innings in the opener in favor of Aguilar and freshman David Rodriguez in relief.
Ontiveros explained that he made the switch to give his relievers some innings and to save Adkins’ arm in case he was needed for a tie-breaker game against Ruidoso later in the week.
Adkins had a grand slam in the fifth, one of Portales’ 14 hits.
Martin Mendoza went 2-for-3 in the opener, with three RBIs in the first inning.
The Colts (4-22, 1-15) got seven hits on the night and scored their lone run in the seventh inning of the nightcap.
