DEXTER — Junior Amanda Marquez pitched a pair of shutouts, leading Portales to District 4-3A sweep Friday at Dexter.

Portales (12-8, 5-1 district) won the opener 2-0 as Cynthia Armjio and Tayler Lucero both went 2-for-3 and four other players got one hit each.

In the nightcap, Portales scored in three of the first four innings en route to an 11-0 win. Kelsey Laurenz went 3-for-4 to lead Portales.

“We didn’t hit well in the first game, but our defense came through,” Portales coach Robbie Crowley said. “Marquez pitched really well, and the defense backed her up.”

Crowley said she is really impressed with how Marquez has become more mentally tough and has been cutting down on her walks.

“Marquez did a great job,” Crowley said. “I think she got stronger in the second game. She just keeps getting better every day.”

Dexter (7-13, 0-6) has been outscored 73-10 over the last six games.

Portales plays a district doubleheader at Lovington at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
