RUIDOSO — Led by freshman Ethan Peterson’s round of 75, the Clovis High boys golf team chopped 16 strokes off its team score Tuesday and finished fifth in the 14-team large-school Leroy Gooch Invitational golf tournament
Tuesday’s round was played at The Links Golf Course.
Roswell Goddard held off rival Roswell High to win it, shooting a 36-hole total of 627 to 631 for the Coyotes. Deming was third at 635, followed by Grants at 631 and the Wildcats at 650.
The Clovis High girls, after shooting 407 on Monday, finished last in the eight-team large-school girls field, struggling to a 487 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 894 at Cree Meadows Golf Course.
Alamogordo shot 725 and rolled to a 44-stroke victory over runnerup Artesia.
In the small-school (Class 1A-3A) division, the Portales Lady Rams coasted to the girls team championship, shooting 414-431 — 845 for a 56-stroke margin over runnerup Ruidoso. Portales’ boys finished in a tie for third with Socorro at 651, trailing St. Michael’s (623) and Lovington (626).
