Portales placed four golfers in the top five, and are cruising after one day at the Leroy Gooch girls tournament in Ruidoso.

Paige Hartman shot a 48 on the back nine at Cree Meadows for a score of 99, putting her two strokes ahead of teammate Amber McCasland at 101. Kelsey Prince and Tylar Rowley are in a tie for fourth place at 107.

In boys action at Alto Links, the Rams are in fourth place with a score of 330, 12 strokes behind St. Michael’s. Donavin Sanchez is third among all Class 1A-3A golfers with a score of 76, and he is followed by teammates Will Archibeque (79), Tristan Cottrell (87), Rick Bergman (88) and Rick Short (100).

The teams will switch courses today.
