HEREFORD — Senior Izzy Miranda and junior Richie Chavez won individual events for Clovis High’s boys on Friday’s first day of competition in the Hereford Invitational track meet.

Miranda took the 3,200 in a time of 10 minutes, 3 seconds, while Chavez placed first in discus at 156-8. The Wildcats also got a fourth-place finish  in long jump from James Howard at an even 21 feet.

Most of the finals are on tap today, including the 800 and 1,600. The Cats qualified junior Josh Foster in the 400 and will have their 400, 800 and 1,600 relay teams in today’s finals as well.

The 800 relay team turned in a state-qualifying time of 1:31.65, the third-best time on Friday.

CHS assistant coach Mike Hankins said that even with breezy conditions, the Cats benefited from the competition after losing two of their first three meets this spring to inclement weather.

“It was good to get to run,” Hankins said. “It was good to get a relay qualified (for state), and we’re close in the (other two) relays.”

No results were available at press time on the Clovis girls squad.

The meet is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. today.
