If Clovis High’s boys were worried about a turnover on their first possession Thursday night, followed by a 3-pointer from Carlsbad’s Robbey Arrington, they certainly didn’t let it show.

Suffice it to say, it was all Wildcats after that. Clovis destroyed the Cavemen 83-29 to advance to Saturday’s District 4-5A tournament championship game at Hobbs.

To say the game was completely one-sided would be, well, an understatement of mass proportions. To wit:

n Clovis scored the next 19 points after Arrington’s trey. Carlsbad went 0-for-6 from the field with eight turnovers during that stretch.

n The Cats shot 67 percent in the first half, then did even better in the final two stanzas — 15-for-18. They finished 35-of-48, an astonishing 73 percent.

n Even more impressive, they outrebounded the Cavemen 38-11. Carlsbad, in fact, went an entire two quarters — the first and third — without a rebound and didn’t get its first carom until 6:19 remained in the first half.

n After Arrington’s 3-pointer, the Cavemen went on to hit only one more from beyond the arc in 12 tries. Overall, they finished a miserable 7-of-40 (18 percent) from the floor.

“We just wanted to come out hard this game so we could rest for the Hobbs game,” said senior post Jaye Crockett, who had 30 points on 11-of-15 shooting and added nine rebounds and three assists in three quarters. “We wanted to come out and put them away quick.”

Senior post Arthur Calbert added 16 points on 8-of-8 shooting, and grabbed seven rebounds. Six-foot-8 junior post Logan Turnbow was particularly effective early, going 4-for-4 for eight points and grabbing five rebounds — all in a first half which ended with the Cats leading 49-17.

Also, senior guard Tanner Adams had eight of the team’s 19 assists. All but one of Clovis’ 12 players scored.

“I thought our intensity was good early,” CHS coach J.D. Isler said. “We talked about trying to get on them early and not letting them hang around.

“Logan has had two really good games in a row. I like the way he’s producing for us right now. And Tanner is helping us off the bench.”

Carlsbad (12-15) ended the season on a four-game losing streak — three coming at the hands of Clovis, which won 70-55 and 77-47 earlier this month. Senior guard Jared Nicholas led the Cavemen with nine points.

The Cats lost 84-62 earlier this month at Hobbs, but feel ready to go after blitzing the Eagles 78-63 last Friday at The Rock.

“Our kids feel like we can defend them,” Isler said. “Everybody’s real comfortable in their roles right now.”

Crockett is looking for this game to be different from the earlier matchup in Hobbs.

“We’re just ready to go play,” he said. “We’ve got to get a win.”
