The Logan Longhorns celebrated homecoming with a pair of district wins against the San Jon Coyotes Saturday at Logan.

The Lady Longhorns moved to 5-2 in district play with a 65-30 win over the (1-6) Lady Coyotes.

Initially it seemed as if homecoming jitters had a hold of the Lady Longhorns. For the first 12 minutes of the game the Lady Coyotes stuck with the Lady Longhorns, keeping the game with in 4 points. The Lady Coyotes were blocking out and holding the Lady Longhorns to one shot and none underneath the basket.

Leading the Lady Coyotes offensive attack were juniors Tracy Foote (17 points) and Morgan Foster (10 points).

"They got out there and played great defense against us throughout that entire first period," Lady Longhorns head coach Clair Rachor said. "With it being homecoming, I'm sure that the girls thoughts were a million miles away from the game at times. But they knew what they needed to do and began to focus on the game."

The Lady Coyotes let things unravel with missed field goals and free throws, and Logan slowly extended lead. Late in the second period the Lady Longhorns put the game out of reach by forcing back-to-back turnovers that lead to a  12-point run.

Leading the offense for the Lady Longhorns were seniors Megan Frost (26 points) and Tiffany Rachor (12 points). 

"The girls just needed to calm down and play good basketball like they have done all season long," Rachor said.

Logan's  lead continued to grow as the game progressed, eventually topping 20 points in the final period of the game. The Lady Coyotes continued to play pressing when they could on defense and working on offense for the score.

"San Jon played with a lot of heart tonight, they kept playing through the entire game," Rachor said. 

Boys

The Longhorns won 80-63 in a physical match-up with the Coyotes to remain undefeated in 1A district play.

"It was a good physical game," said Longhorns head coach Billy Burns. "It is always a treat to have such a close game played against a rival school."

An 8-point run in the second period gave the (7-0) Longhorns a 12-point lead, which they continued to build on for the win.  

Longhorns senior Taylor Smith lead the offensive charge with 20 points. Combined with sophomore Brandon Rafool's 18 points and senior Cimmaron Osborn 15 points, the Longhorns secured the win.

The (2-5) Coyotes were within 4 points of the Longhorns at the end of the first period, and tried to close the gap with the shooting of senior Michael Booth (21-points) and eighth-grader Jacob Benally (12 points).

The Longhorns's district play continues at 6 p.m. Thursday against the Mosquero Pirates at Mosquero.

The Coyotes's district play continues at 6 p.m. Thursday against the Clovis Christian Eagles at San Jon.
