ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s swimmers got a possible preview of state competition in Saturday’s Albuquerque Academy Invitational.

Both CHS teams finished seventh in 13-school competition. Host Academy took both team titles.

The Lady Wildcats had three state-qualifying performances in the meet, while the boys picked up two.

For the Lady Cats, sophomore Jill Southard qualified with a fourth-place time of 5 minutes, 36.89 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle and a fifth-place showing in the 200 freestyle in 2:07.49. The 200 freestyle relay team, which Southard leads off, also qualified with a time of 1:52.73, finishing eighth.

Nick de Maio and Lucas Brock qualified with eighth-place finishes, de Maio in the 200 medley (1:55.10) and Brock in the 500 freestyle (5:29.13).

“They’re coming around well,” CHS coach Vincent de Maio said of his squads. “It was good to be at Academy. The 200 freestyle that Jill was in will be very close to the state final.

“I’m real happy with where the kids are. We’ve got more qualifying times already than we had last year.”

Clovis teams return to action on Saturday in an invitational at Artesia.
