Portales’ Jenna Wagner tips the ball to the left past Lovington’s Kenzie Black during the second game Thursday at Portales High School.

Portales gets one more chance against Ruidoso.

The Lady Rams shook off early errors and finished off Lovington in four games to advance to Saturday’s District 4-3A championship in Ruidoso.

Scores were 25-20, 25-9, 15-25, 25-20.

With the exception of 13 serving errors, coach Ruth Chavez said the Lady Rams (12-9) took care of business.

“We did all right; the first two games were good,” Chavez said. “The third game, we just had some passing errors and serving errors and got down a bit.”

Portales had swept Lovington (9-13) in two regular-season matches, but Chavez said the Wildcats weren’t to be taken lightly.

“Lovington always comes out and plays us hard,” Chavez said. “We knew what was coming.”

In the win, Chavez noted senior Dallas Russell’s passing. Regarding Saturday’s 7 p.m. matchup, there’s little time to refocus.

“We try to prepare every day,” Chavez said. “We just know we’ve got to go out and play. Basically, we lost because we made a lot of errors, We’ve got to play a more aggressive, more confident.”
