Texico sophomore Victoria Richards looks to get a shot off over Bethany Self of Portales during Friday’s consolation semifinal game in the Plateau Holiday Classic at Rock Staubus Gym
Texico coach Keith Durham’s faith in Faith paid off. Senior guard Faith Martin drained a shot from several steps behind the 3-point line at the buzzer to lift the Lady Wolverines to a 26-25 win over Portales on Friday in a Plateau Holiday Classic consolation semifinal game at Rock Staubus Gym. “I looked at the clock and there was 1.2 (seconds) left so I was just, ‘Well, I’ll just shoot it,’ and it went in,” Martin said. “I was watching the clock the whole time.” With the score tied at 23, Portales held the ball for nearly two minutes before junior Tara Johnson scored on a drive to give the Lady Rams the lead with less than four seconds left. “We were going to take a layup off a backpick if we could get it,” first-year Portales coach Clay Stout said. “We didn’t, so we just took it down to the end.” Martin took the inbound pass and pushed the ball ahead several dribbles before releasing the shot, which was in the air as the buzzer sounded. “I said, ‘Hey, you know you’ve got about two dribbles and so take two dribbles and let it go,’ and she let it go and it went in,” Texico coach Keith Durham said. “They gave us a chance and it went in.” Martin led Texico (9-1) with 13 points, while Johnson also led Portales (3-6) with 13 points. The thrilling finish was set up by a Texico comeback spurred by Martin. Portales held the defending Class 2A state champion Lady Wolverines scoreless in the second quarter en route to a 13-5 lead at the break. “I told the team at halftime, I said, ‘You know what? When we start playing hard, good things will happen.’ And we just kind of crept back into the game,” Durham said. Texico (9-1) cut Portales’ lead to 18-15 after the third quarter as Martin posted six points and junior guard Amanda Bass added four. “That’s what’s unique about this bunch here,” Durham said. “They know how to win.” “They (Lady Wolverines) did a good job of finding a way to win,” Stout said.
