Wildcats seek to stay perfect with Milk Cow Classic opening

Clovis junior Stefan Mills could play 12 minutes, finish scoreless with no rebounds and no assists and still do his job.
As long as he takes care of the ball and plays adequate minutes to rest scorers Jaden Isler (22.8 points per game) and Bryce Hill (18.2), the 5-foot-10, 170-pound guard is helping the Wildcats win.
“During the season, I knew that would be my role, to spell Jaden and Bryce,” Mills said. “My job’s not to go in there and score 30 points a game. My job’s to go in there, play defense, handle the ball and help out the team in any way I can.”
Mills knows his role, and the Wildcats (6-0) know theirs — to stay undefeated and win the Milk Cow Classic. But it’s easier said than done, with a bracket that includes the state’s third-ranked 5A team (Cibola), a Los Lunas team that upset Cibola last week, back-to-back 3A champion St. Michael’s, Amarillo Tascosa and Abilene Cooper.
“It’s not going to be a tournament where you have a cakewalk into the finals,” Clovis coach J.D. Isler said. “We have tough teams in our bracket. We want to play good teams to get better.”
The Wildcats open in a 7:30 p.m. game against Santa Fe High, which won’t want to go point for point with Clovis’ potent offense (74.2 points per game).
“They want the tempo to be a little slower,” Isler said. “I think they’d be happy it the game was in the 40s and 50s.
“I think it’s going to be important for us to shoot the ball early, and I think we will.”
Isler said the team chemistry is good for Clovis, but there are still plenty of mistakes the team is making. Many times, Isler said, the players are making the right pass, but turn the ball over because the pass is a half-second early or late.
“We’ve had too many mental mistakes,” Mills said. “If we cut down on those, we’ll be a better team.”
