TEXICO — The Texico Wolverines built a 17-point lead through three quarters and held off the Clovis High junior varsity 66-60 for the boys championship of the Citizens Bank Border Shootout on Saturday night. Sophomore Seth Bailey, who hit six 3-pointers, and senior Daniel Schueler each finished with 21 points for the Wolverines (5-2), while senior Courtland Luscombe added 13. Meantime, junior Tanner Adams had four 3-pointers and 21 points and junior Bryan Pierson chipped in 17 points for the Wildcats (2-2). Meantime, Texico’s girls made it a sweep and kept their record unblemished for the season, using a dominating third quarter to beat the Clovis JV 42-25. The Lady Wildcats (5-3) led 14-13 at halftime before Texico (8-0) went on an 18-3 blitz in the third period to take control. Senior guard Faith Martin had four 3-pointers and 17 points for Texico. Sophomore forward Delaney Ware topped the Lady Cats with 10. Only six of the eight games scheduled for Saturday were played. Amarillo Arbor Academy, slated to face Plains in fifth-place contests, did not make the return trip after Friday’s snow and those games were canceled. In other boys final-round games, Melrose defeated Farwell 50-34 for third place and Bovina topped Clovis Christian 70-60 for seventh. Melrose also took the third-place girls game, slipping past Farwell 37-35 in overtime, while CCS earned seventh on the girls side with a 47-39 victory over Bovina. Melrose boys 50, Farwell 34 — The Buffaloes (4-3) went on an 18-5 run in the final period to break open a close game. The teams were tied 20-20 at halftime. Sophomore Clint Barnard scored 15 points for Melrose, while the Steers (5-11) were led by nine points from senior forward Logan Carpenter. Melrose girls 37, Farwell 35, OT — The Lady Blue (10-7) suffered a second consecutive overtime loss, having fallen 49-48 to Texico in Friday’s semifinals. Melrose (4-3) scored only seven points in the first half, but put together a 13-5 run in the final quarter to force the extra session. Sophomore Jordan Beard topped the Lady Buffs with 11 points, while senior Shelby Christian scored 10 points to pace Farwell. Bovina boys 70, Clovis Christian 61 — The Mustangs jumped out to a 20-8 lead at the quarter, but CCS mounted a comeback and pulled within two points late in the third period. Junior Jesus Rocha poured in 30 points and senior Trent Quintana added 22 for Bovina (3-11). Junior Ross Miller led the Eagles (2-4) with 22 points, while senior Tyler Shipman added 12. Clovis Christian girls 47, Bovina 39 — The Lady Eagles (2-4) opened a seven-point halftime lead and made it stand up behind 18 points from junior post Jennifer Schaap. Sophomore Kim Casas had four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points for Bovina (5-9).
