ARTESIA — Senior guard Bryce Hill scored 27 points Thursday as Clovis High’s boys cruised past El Paso Burges 67-48 in the first round of the City of Champions Classic. The Wildcats (2-0) advanced to a 4:30 p.m. championship semifinal game today against defending Colorado Class 4A champion Denver Lincoln, a 79-73 winner over Roswell Goddard on Thursday. Clovis opened a 20-15 lead at the quarter and steadily expanded it throughout the contest. The Cats pulled away in the third quarter, holding the Mustangs (4-5) to six points. “We played with great effort,” CHS coach J.D. Isler said. “The kids are playing hard, but we’re just not very smooth right now.” Hill had one of his best offensive games in three years on the varsity. “He shot the ball well today, and he was active,” Isler said. “(Junior) Jaye Crockett was real active on the boards, and had some nice putbacks for us.” Crockett finished with 19 points for Clovis, while senior guard Jaden Isler added 10 points and 10 assists. Coach Isler said it took the Cats a while to get the Mustangs out of their deliberate pace. “They really showed the game down early,” he said. “It was a real methodical first half, but we came out and had a good defensive third quarter.”
