Elida sweeps Clovis teams The Elida Tigers and Lady Tigers began Tucumcari’s Route 66 Classic Thursday with big wins over low-level Clovis teams. The Tigers (7-0) opened their tournament with a 74-57 win against the Clovis “C” team. Elida jumped out to a 25-8 lead after the first quarter, and led 52-21 at the half. “We played really well,” Elida coach Darrell Chenault said. “We had a 30-point lead at halftime and we got to play all of our kids.” Senior Ever Varela led Elida with 19, followed by Junior Cade Cathey’s 14 points. Ryan Best added 12 points. The Elida girls (5-2) were just as dominant, beating the Clovis “purple” team 65-14. “We came out and played aggressive,” Elida coach Dan Howard said. “We did some good things, we worked on a little bit of offense. We looked pretty sharp. I was impressed with that.” The Elida girls and boys both play host Tucumcari in the second round of the tournament tonight. Floyd splits tournament games The Floyd Broncos and Lady Broncos had mixed results Thursday in the first round of the Mountain Top tournament in Cloudcroft. The Broncos (5-3) lost to Cloudcroft 57-53, while the Lady Broncos edged Quemado 51-49. Sophomore Jesus Davalos led Floyd with 21 points and senior Colton Palmer added 17. The Broncos found themselves down by three points after the first quarter, but the Bears outscored Floyd 21-8 in the second period to take a 33-17 halftime lead. “We did OK, especially in the second half,” Floyd coach Rafael Roybal said. “We didn’t play good early.” The Lady Broncos beat Quemado by two points despite shooting 7-of-25 from the free throw line. Floyd led by a single point after the first quarter, but they trailed the majority of the game. Quemado led 33-26 at the half and 41-38 after three periods. “It was a long trip up here,” Floyd coach Adam Terry said. “We didn’t shoot very well. We were playing catch-up for a long time, but we finally adjusted and we caught up and won in the last two minutes.” Freshman Tori Tucker led Floyd with 24 points, followed by sophomore Veronica Mendoza with 12. Dora falls to Mesa Vista The Dora Coyotes (3-2) lost their first round game in the Tularosa Classic Thursday to Mesa Vista 88-72. Dora fell behind in a high scoring first quarter 30-20, as Mesa Vista poured in five 3-pointers in the first period. Dora was outscored in the second quarter as well, to fall behind at the half 47-33. “I felt like we played a pretty solid game, but we fell behind early,” Dora coach Ty Thatcher said. “When you score 20 in the first quarter and are behind by 10 (points), it’s hard to compete with that.” Senior Wesley Skelley led the Coyotes with 16 points, followed by junior Kyler Smith’s 14 points. Clay Smith added 13 points. The Dora boys play Dexter in the second round this afternoon.
