Texico girls beat Friona for title

FARWELL — Junior Amanda Bass scored 12 points and senior Faith Martin added 10 Saturday night to help Texico win the Security State Bank Invitational girls championship with a 43-33 victory over Friona.
The Lady Wolverines (4-0) opened an 8-2 lead at the quarter against the Squaws. Bass and Reed each converted a pair of 3-pointers for Texico.
Senior Briar Barnett finished with 10 points for Friona (5-7).
In the boys championship game, Friona returned the favor with a 67-55 victory over Texico. Senior Sawyer Reed scored 19 points for the Chieftains (8-2), who stayed in control with the help of 16-for-18 shooting from the free throw line.
Texico (2-1) was led by sophomore Seth Bailey with 17 points.
In third-place games, Vega’s girls defeated Farwell 47-37 while the Vega boys downed the host Steers in overtime 65-63.
Brady Harwell, a 6-foot sophomore, went 8-for-8 from the line en route to 18 points as the Longhorns (7-4) rallied after falling behind 19-6 at the end of a quarter. Junior Trey Galbraith and sophomore Chip Morris each added 12 points.
Farwell (3-9) got 20 points from senior Ross McClaran, leading four players in double figures. Senior Dalton Cockerham finished with 15 points, junior Bo Mitchell 14 and senior Logan Carpenter 10 for the Steers.
Vega’s girls improved to 11-2, opening a 17-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Janae Noggler had 12 points and senior Michelle Fangman added 11 for the Lady Longhorns, while sophomore Tiffani Jones led the Lady Blue (8-5) with 12 points.
Fifth-place games
Morton boys 53, Grady 51, OT — Senior Antione Garrett scored five of his game-high 30 points in overtime as the Indians (4-6) outlasted the Bronchos. Senior Brian Blackburn topped Grady (4-5) with 20 points.
Bovina girls 36, Melrose 30 — The Fillies (4-6) held Melrose to 15 points through three quarters and won behind 12 points from senior Ruby Vela. High scorer for the Lady Buffaloes (2-2) was senior TaNeil Roberts with nine points.
Seventh-place games
Melrose boys 46, Bovina 42 — The Buffaloes (2-2) won a nip-and-tuck game behind 18 points from senior Adam Hairgrove and 12 from sophomore Clint Barnard. The Mustangs (2-8) were led by junior Jesus Rocha with 16 points and senior Trent Quintana with 10.
Grady girls 50, Morton 39 — The Lady Bronchos (5-4) converted 26-of-35 free throws and were in control most of the way as freshman Mandy Rush — 14-of-17 from the line — poured in 20 points and junior Payton Provencio — 8-of-10 from the stripe — added 14.
The Maidens (4-8) were led by 12 points apiece from Joketha Ross and Stormi Harvey.
