Dora girls start season with loss at Whiteface

The Dora Lady Coyotes began the annual Whiteface basketball tournament Thursday afternoon with a 42-40 loss to host Whiteface.
“Pretty good for a first game,” Dora head coach Malaqui Webster said. “We have a few things we need to still work on before we get closer to district. Overall they played pretty well, made some silly mistakes, but overall we did pretty good.”
Whiteface led after the first quarter 11-9, but the Lady Coyotes pulled even at the half 20-20.
Whiteface outscored Dora by 10 in the third period to take a 37-27 lead and the Dora girls mounted a comeback attempt late in the contest, but fell two points short 42-40.
“In the third quarter, Whiteface got a 10-point lead on us and by the end of the fourth quarter we started playing catch-up and I think if we had a little bit more time we would have been OK. We just ran out of time.”
Dora junior Tearney O’Connor led the Lady Coyotes with 12 points, followed by freshman Kelli Merrick with 8 points. Sophomore Tori Varnell and junior Kendra Merrick both added 5 points.
“We were real aggressive (defensively),” Webster said.
The Dora girls face Abernathy at noon CST in their next game Friday in the round-robin tournament.
