Veteran Clovis girls basketball coach Miles Watters knows the Lady Wildcats are a work in progress despite Tuesday’s season-opening 64-20 blowout of Roswell Goddard at Rock Staubus Gym The Lady Cats make a quick turnaround, playing in the 17-team Polk-Key City Tournament in Abilene, Texas, beginning today. Their first of possibly four games in the three-day event is at 5 p.m. (MST) against Abilene Wylie. At least they know something about the Lady Bulldogs. Clovis played Wylie twice during a summer tournament, earning a split. “I’m anxious for the tournament,” CHS sophomore forward Antiesha Brown said after Tuesday’s game. “We hung with them this summer.” With no dominant scorer returning, Watters said the Lady Cats are trying to find out where their points will come from this season. Tuesday’s game may be indicative — Mariah Sena scored 10 points and five others had at least seven. “We’re really playing fast,” Watters said. “We’re going to make some mistakes playing that way, but we did some really good things (against Goddard).” One thing they did was limit their own turnovers — 11, compared with 33 for the Lady Rockets. Watters used five-player rotations for much of Tuesday’s game, and said he may continue to do that for the time being as things sort themselves out. The other teams in the field are all from Texas, including two other Abilene squads — Cooper and Abilene High. The Lady Cats are bracketed with Mansfield and Lubbock Monterey, who play at 11 a.m. (MST) today. If they beat Wylie, they meet the Mansfield-Monterey winner at 9:30 a.m. Friday; if they lose, they play the loser at 12:30 p.m.
