Mules count on air attack in playoff tilt
Published: Friday, November 16th, 2007
Muleshoe’s playoff chances are up in the air.
The more times the ball is in the air, the better the Mules’ chances of advancing in the playoffs.
The Mules (9-1) meet Sanford-Fritch (5-5) today at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo in a classic matchup of speed against size.
Led by gunslingling senior quarterback Garrett Riley and a bevy of sure-handed receivers, the Mules are averaging more than 44 points a game.
The school’s all-time leader in almost every passing category, Riley has thrown for more than 2,300 yards and 37 touchdowns. Seven Mules have caught at least 16 passes.
“We’re two deep at every receiver position,” Muleshoe coach David Wood said. “We rotate them in and out, which is good, because it keeps them fresh for defense.”
The Eagles counter with a power running game led by quarterback Nick Shelton (814 yards, 9 TDs).
Wood said the key is to get a few early stops and force Sanford-Fritch to put the ball in the air.
“We’re as quick as we’ve ever been,” said Wood, who has led his team to the playoffs in nine of his 12 years at the school. “We’re not that big, but we get a lot of people around the ball.”
In another Texas playoff game involving an area school, Bovina (5-5) faces Quanah (6-4) for a third straight year in a Class 1A Division I game in Lubbock. The Indians won the first two meetings.
Bovina relies on a ground game led by 1,000-yard rusher Mauricio Garcia and a stingy defense. The Mustangs, who feature 13 seniors, have held opponents to 15 points or less in seven of 10 games.
“They want to prove they can go further in the playoffs,” second-year Bovina coach Hector Guevara said of his players.
To do that, the Mustangs will have to slow down a speedy Quanah team led by running back Tevin Mitchell, who has rushed for 1,818 yards and 14 touchdowns.
“They’re pretty fast,” Guevara said. “We’ve faced some teams with some good speed this season and done pretty well.
“We’ll just have to see.”
