No surprises this year. The Clovis Wildcats earned the No. 3 seed in the Class 5A playoffs and will have a first-round bye. The Wildcats will host the winner of Friday’s first-round game between No. 6 La Cueva and No. 11 Alamogordo next week. Mayfield and Las Cruces, both 9-1, earned the top two seeds in the 12-team playoffs announced Saturday. Cibola was fourth. Clovis assistant coach Darren Kelley said the Wildcats (7-3) deserved the No. 3 seed after beating Carlsbad 34-0 on Friday. The top four seeds earn a first-round bye and host a quarterfinal game. Clovis was seeded fourth last year behind District 3-5A runnerup Alamogordo, which annoyed the Wildcats coaching staff. Barring an upset, Clovis will be at home throughout this year’s playoffs. Top-seeded Mayfield, No. 2 Las Cruces or No. 4 Cibola would have to play at Clovis under the state’s alternating homefield format for the playoffs. Clovis is 4-2 against teams making the 5A playoffs, including a 26-21 loss at La Cueva in Week 4 of the season. La Cueva (7-3) is the 2-5A champ. Alamogordo (6-4) finished fourth in District 3-5A, which earned four bids, including both at-large berths.
