Mark Bussen is hoping his Clovis High cross country teams can slip up on the competition in today’s District 4-5A meet at Hobbs. The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats have started to move up on Hobbs and Carlsbad in recent meets, Bussen said, although he acknowledges they’ll have their work cut out. “Hobbs is running really well,” Bussen said of the boys meet. “We’ve beaten Carlsbad once (last week), but we know they’ll be tough. “Hobbs is the favorite, but we’re close enough that if we run well we’ll have a chance.” Carlsbad, led by junior twins Brandi and Brittany Castillo, is a solid favorite in the girls race. Bussen would like to see the Lady Wildcats catch Hobbs, though. “Our girls are hoping to sneak up on Hobbs and maybe get a second-place trophy,” he said. No matter what happens, all three teams will be eligible for state coompetition on Nov. 10 at Rio Rancho. The top three teams in each of four districts qualify. Junior Caitlin Waters leads the Lady Cats, and Bussen hopes she can push the Castillo twins. Juniors Kayla Merritt and Callie Bunce also have a chance to make the top 10, he said. For the boys, he’s hoping four runners — juniors Justin Netcher and Justin Kyle and sophomores Jaron Morgin and Seth Zarate — can finish in the top 10. Junior varsity races are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. The varsity girls’ start is set for 4:05 p.m., with the boys going off at 4:35 p.m.
