ODESSA, Texas — Designated hitter Jordan Chavez and left fielder Erik Scott each drove in two runs in a five-run eighth as New Mexico Higlands beat Eastern New Mexico University 8-1 on Saturday in the Texas-Permian Basin Classic.
The game, with a 9:30 p.m. (MST) start, was the only one played on Saturday. The remainder of the schedule was canceled due to windy, cold conditions.
Leading 3-1, Chavez hit a two-run single to center off ENMU eliever Ryan Pruitt. Chavez eventually scored on an infield hit by shortstop Thomas King, and Scott capped the rally with a two-out, two-run triple to center field off ENMU’s Moto Asai.
The Hounds (2-1), who beat UTPB and Incarnate Word on Friday, scored first in the bottom of the third off Highlands right-hander Ray Torres. Second baseman Jordan Vina reached on a three-base error by Highlands second baseman Justin Rodriguez and came home on a single by Luis Quinones.
The Cowboys (2-0) tied it in the fourth when A.J. Alexander doubled with one out, stole third and scored on a groundout by Robbie Ingram.
Highlands took the lead with two runs in the seventh, chasing ENMU starter Daniel Sterling (0-1). Chavez singled and eventually scoring on a wild pitch by reliever Gabriel Hemmer, and Clay Mohr added an RBI groundout.
Alexander went 4-fo4-5 and Chavez 3-for-4 for the Cowboys, who finished with 13 hits.
Sterling put together a quality start, allowing seven hits and two runs with two walks and five strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.
Torres gave up three hits in six innings with a walk and two strikeouts for the Cowboys. Jason Sirak worked the final three innings, allowing one hit, to earn a save.
The Hounds return to action next weekend in an event hosted by University of the Southwest at Hobbs.
