Encanto Garden Club

Encanto Garden Club met June 8 in Melrose at the homes of members Jeanne Augenstein and Lori Frazure.

Friends and neighbors accompanied the Master Gardeners through the raised vegetable beds, ground covers, flowers and bushes. Winding paths showcased various plants, which survive and thrive in this harsh southeastern New Mexico climate.

Refreshments were enjoyed while lively discussions could be heard regarding the care of more fragile plants and the use of plants which can take anything that Mother Nature dishes out.

Club members voted to donate to the Red Cross for tornado victims and door prizes of gardening books and plant pulleys signaled the close of this educational and enjoyable garden tour.

Claud Rainy Day Extension club

The Claud Rainy Day Extension Club met May 25 at Muffley’s Back Door. Plans were made for summer get-togethers and arrangements made for sorting of donated materials.

The next meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. June 22 at the Prince Coffee Bistro.

Music will be provided by Matt Carter.

Altrusa club of Clovis

Altrusa International of Clovis held their monthly evening meeting June 13 at Muffley’s Back Door. President Kathy Travis called the meeting to order. Hostesses Mary Weigl and Judith Glikas served a delicious meal. Also present were: Leslie McCloud, Carolyn Muffley, Glenda Hileman, Nancy Taylor, Joanne Winslow, Margaret Blazek and Narcy Tucker.

Member Joanne Winslow of KWS Insurance, presented a very informative program about the different aspects of Medicare and supplemental insurance.

Volunteers were assigned to drive for Meals on Wheels this week. Discussion was held on the upcoming “Add an Altrusan” picnic in August.

The next board meeting will be June 20 and the next business meeting will be June 28.

Altrusa club of Portales

The Altrusa International Club of Portales, met June 13 at noon in the Central Annex. President Gaynelle Thomas called the meeting to order. There were 17 members and one guest present. Nellie Dyer led the opening ceremonies. The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved, along with the 2011-2012 budget.

Perfect attendance certificates were presented to Jo Nell Brooks, Candy Howl, Wanda Pettus, Linda Leaming, Jo Laney, Dannah Brown and Gaynelle Thomas.

A board recommendation to charge $7.50 per meal for the Fifth Monday meetings.

The president was given the authority to appoint a delegate to the International Convention.

The next meeting on June 27 will be guest day, and members were asked to let the Membership Committee know if they are inviting someone.

After the close of the business meeting, members met in the various committees and made plans for the year.
