AMARILLO — Clovis High’s track teams combined to get six entries qualified for state competition during the two-day Amarillo Relays.
The Wildcats finished fifth with 34 points in boys competition, won by Amarillo Tascosa with 162. Canyon Randall won the girls team title with 89 points, while the Lady Wildcats were 10th with 28 points.
Junior Jenna Sievers had two of the Lady Cats’ four qualifying marks, finishing third in high jump at 5-2 and fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.49 seconds. Also qualifying was sophomore Sasha Smith in the 100 in 12.64 and the 1,600 relay team of Nichelle Hyman, Nikki Jimenez, Shatia Phillips and Smith in 4:07.06.
“The 4-by-4 was probably the highlight of the meet for us,” Lady Cats coach Mike Hankins said. “And for Sasha to go fourth in the 100 in a meet of this caliber, that says a lot for where she’s at right now.”
“We didn’t get the 4-by-1 or 4-by-2 (relays) qualified, but we were close.”
Sievers had a strong meet in the hurdles, he added.
“We’ve only been over the hurdles about one day with Jenna, so it was a good weekend for her,” Hankins said.
Senior Kenny Betts had already qualified for state in shot put, but threw a personal-best 52 feet, 10 inches in this meet to finish second. He added a qualifying mark in discus, throwing 143-7.
The other event to qualify for the Wildcats was the 800 relay team, which did it with a time of 1:30.9 in Friday’s prelims before coming back at 1:32.26 on Saturday to take fourth place.
“It was a tough two days,” Cats coach Darren Kelley said. “We’re going to get after it and get in shape. We ran better times in the prelims on Friday than we did on Saturday.
“We’re just not in shape for a two-day track meet yet.”
Clovis teams return to action on Friday and Saturday in the Whiteface Relays at Hereford.
