LAWTON, Okla. — Tyler Cox hit a two-run single and Josh Dawson added a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, rallying Cameron to a 5-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico University and a sweep of their four-game Lone Star Conference baseball series.
Cameron took Sunday’s seven-inning opener 9-0 behind a four-hit shutout from James Rhodes (3-3) in the LSC doubleheader.
The Aggies (16-14, 4-4 LSC) won three of the games in walkoff fashion.
The losses were the eighth and ninth in a row for the Greyhounds (9-16, 0-8), their longest losing streak since a nine-game slide in February 2011.
ENMU erased a 2-0 second-game deficit with a three-run fifth, getting an RBI single from junior left fielder Luis Quinones and a two-run single from junior third baseman Sam Hedrick with two out. Junior second baseman Daniel Binz led off the sixth with his second home run of the season, making it 4-2.
Senior right-hander Joe Jones (1-3) relieved ENMU starter Gabriel Hemmer with one out in the sixth and blanked the Aggies until running into trouble in the ninth.
Andrew Garcia singled, Kevin Waukau reached on an error and Nick Smith beat out an infield hit to load the bases with no one out, and Cox followed with a game-tying two-run single to center.
Benshell Garcia singled to right, but ENMU’s Blake Thomsen kept the game alive by throwing out Smith trying to score. After a popup for the second out, Jones walked Taylor Lyons to load the bases and gave way to right-hander Chris Bataska, who surrendered Dawson’s game-winning hit to left-center.
Cody Hudson (2-0) relieved starter Jordan Watson after the homer by Binz and earned the win with four innings of one-hit shutout relief, needing only 31 pitches. Cameron won despite stranding 16 baserunners.
In the opener, Waukau went 3-for-3 with three doubles, three RBI, a walk and four runs scored. He doubled in a run in Cameron’s three-run third and added a two-run double during a four-run sixth.
The Aggies collected 25 hits in the two games, and also benefited from 12 walks, three hit batsmen and three ENMU errors
