SAN ANTONIO — Brianna Bozon hit a two-out, two-run double in the second inning and pinch-hitter Faith Roberts delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth on Friday as St. Edward’s edged Eastern New Mexico University 5-3 in the season-opening NCAA Division II College Classic softball event, hosted by St. Mary’s.
ENMU dropped to 0-2 for the day. The Zias lost earlier Friday to Lubbock Christian 10-0.
ENMU continues play in the event today with games against Texas-Permian Basin at noon and host St. Mary’s at 4 p.m. (MST). On Sunday, the Zias face Texas A&M International at 8:30 a.m. (MST).
Sophomore catcher Aurelia Sandoval’s two-out RBI single staked the Zias to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second against St. Mary’s, and they pulled even at 2-2 in the third when Beatriz Caporal reached on an error and came all the way around on Kyra Sirag’s infield hit and a throwing error on the play.
Down 5-2, the Zias got a leadoff triple from Ke VonSchriltz and a one-out RBI single from Sirag in the seventh. But Rattlers pitcher Emily Mayfield got the side out to complete a five-inning relief stint for the win.
Sirag, Sandoval and VonSchriltz each had two of the Zias’ seven hits.
After going down in order in the top of the first, Lubbock Christian broke the earlier game open with a seven-run second and won it in five innings on the eight-run rule. The Lady Chaps sent 13 batters to the plate in a rally featuring four walks, two hit batsmen and only four hits — including a two-run single by McKenzie Clemmons and a two-run triple by Mallory Koschany — with six of the runs scoring after two were out.
LCU added an RBI single by Koschany in the fourth and run-scoring doubles by Clemmons and Longoria in the fifth.
LCU’s Courtney McGee went 4 2/3 innings for the win, allowing only one hit — a single by Alberta Medina with one out in the fifth. With two-out, Tori Bayer relieved McGee and got ENMU’s Savannah Chavez on strikes to end it.
