ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High’s boys set four school records and the girls added two during Friday’s preliminary competition of the state swimming tournament at Albuquerque.

The boys advanced eight events to today’s championship finals (top eight qualifiers) and five to the consolation finals (ninth through 16th). The girls have four events in the championship round and three in consolation competition, including both of their relays.

“The boys swam great today,” CHS coach Vincent de Maio said. “There’s more work to be done, but it was a great day of swimming for the Clovis High School guys.”

Records were set by the 200 medley relay team, Everett Ward in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Brock Smith in the 200 individual medley.

Girls records were set by Caitlin Dial in the 200 freestyle and Madison Silveira in the 200 IM.

Going in, de Maio was hoping the Wildcats, with eight swimmers, could finish in the top five as a team and the Lady Wildcats, with just four, could end up in the top 10.

“The boys are in great shape to be in the top five,” he said, “but without the relays it’s going to be tough for the girls.”
