Storytelling: Cultural preservation

The children, probably from 4 or 5 years old to 12, sat (or lay) on the floor in front, close to the speaker — the storyteller. The grownups sat on the floor or in chairs. The audience had a speaking part in the story, which the storyteller explained. The younger kids, especially, listened carefully for […]

Airmen serving community well

By Col. Stephen Clark, guest columnist A few weeks ago I was asked to be the keynote speaker at a Joint Land Use Study housing forum. While my comments were geared toward our much-talked-about housing issues, my focus was on a much more important point and that is community. Specifically, your airmen and their families […]

Health reform hurts small businesses

Freedom New Mexico Before Congress rushed approval of the massive government overhaul of health care, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi infamously said: “(W)e have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.” The more we find out about the Obamacare “reform” that put the federal government in control of one-sixth […]

By Don McAlavy: Local columnist A brief article in the Clovis News of Dec 23, 1920, said, “Boy Scouts organized in Clovis by Rev. Polston at the Christian Church. Sept. 14, 2008 Letters to the Editor

Organizers largely unappreciated One really has to wonder about the Republican party after its national convention. Speaker Rudy Giuliani brought up the topic of community organizers and the audience laughed. Then vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin made a reference to community organizers and the audience snickered. For a party that wants to be known as […]

Proposed act warrants vote in U.S. House

Freedom New Mexico House Speaker Nancy Pelosi apparently has decided there won’t be a vote this year to permanently prevent the government from imposing the so-called Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters. In fact, Pelosi favors reestablishing the doctrine, which would elevate government as the final arbiter of what’s fair in public discourse. In a nation founded […]

Safety concerns for speaker lead to tax dollar waste

Freedom Newspapers There were two telltale signs that becoming speaker of the House had gone to the head of Newt Gingrich, the history professor-turned-politician who masterminded the Republican takeover of Congress in 1994. The first was when he asked The Smithsonian to lend him the skull of a tyrannosaurus rex for display in his office. […]
